Thu, Mar. 12th, 2009, 09:54 pm ineffectual whinging of the day #429

I got an email today from a coworker of mine. She's a pretty bright person. She's known me for about three years now. Undoubtedly, she's seen my name in print dozens of times. She was replying to an email of mine, which was bookended by lines reading From: Stefan Rau <stefan42 at gmail.com> and Thanks, Stefan. What was the first line of her email? "Hi Stephan," Thirty-three years, and this still annoys the living fuck out of me. Johns, Daves, and Franks of the world, you'll never appreciate how easy you have it. A least you don't get your name misspelled as "Brain" half the time! Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 02:30 am (UTC)

Is it stuh-FAHN or STEH-fuhn? Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 03:03 am (UTC)

Well, there's no simple answer to that. My family and people who knew me when I was a kid all say "STEF-uhn" (with a schwa sound for the second syllable, same as Fatsis pronounces his name). I prefer "STEF-ahn" (umlauted A sound for the second syllable), and that's how I introduce myself to people. Most people who've met me in college or afterwards go with "ste-FAHN." I couldn't say why, as I've never pronounced it that way myself, since it sounds a little pretentious to my ears. Oddly, variant pronunciations don't really bother me at all. But misspellings..... I agree ste-FAHN is a bit haughty-sounding. STEF-ahn is I think the French pronunciation for the name Stephane. I like STEF-uhn best, but it's not my name, so my opinion doesn't matter! Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 02:35 am (UTC)

Intuitively, it seems obvious that people learn to spell by seeing something spelled out a number of times and remembering the sequence of letters. However, available evidence clearly contradicts this "obvious" notion. God knows how people actually learn to spell, but it certainly isn't by paying attention to what they see. Yeah, my first name is easy, but my last name gets mangled all the time. Just last Thursday in our first night of teacher training, my co-facilitator Bryan, who has been my mentor in just about all aspects of my job for the first few months, wrote my name on the board as Koening. I corrected it but then made a crucial error: chiding him in front of the trainees about it. Tonight, on the second night of training, my name was Keonig on the board. I saw it, but left it as is for the first half of class. At the break, while he was out of the room, I fixed it and changed his name to Brian, which he absolutely hates. We'll see how he retaliates next week. Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 04:40 am (UTC)

I get Greg all the time, and in spite of the fact that my surname outnumbers all variants in the phone book, I still get by far more Roland's and Rowlands's than my more common -w- non plural. When Toronto had a mayor named June Rowlands, I noticed these misspellings increased. Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 07:19 am (UTC)

At this point, misspelling my name only mildly annoys me, because it's not pronounced like it's spelled. Getting Horsch or Horsh instead of Horch is just a fact of life. What bugs me way out of proportion to its importance in the grand scheme of things is the way people spell the site I work at: It's Red Bank. Two words. Not "Redbank". Not "RedBank". And for the love of Java, all you camelCaps dipshits, not "redBank"! What makes it so annoying is that two much larger sites are Seal Beach and Huntington Beach, California, yet nobody ever spells them "Sealbeach" or "Huntingtonbeach". [Actual question asked of me in fourth grade: "Hey Horseshit, what's your real name?"] Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 03:21 pm (UTC)

A transcription of my end of every booking I've ever done over the phone: Hi, I'd like to book a room for the Dallas Open. My name? Sure, it's Jason Hlady. Hlady, that's right. No, not Laddy. Sure, it's H-L... no, not H-A-L, it's H-L. H-L-A-D-Y. No, no, you've just spelled HALDY. Right, it starts H-L. ... Yes, H-L *is* an unusual way to start a name. Yeah, so H-L-A-D-Y. Great. Ah, very clever, H-LADY, yes, that's a good way to remember it. No, I don't say H-LADY but haha that's the first time I've heard that. That's right, yeah, I know Felicia Hadley... yeah, we're not related, I can see where the confusion might lie, the names are the same except for the fact that they're spelled and pronounced differently... yeah, ok, you have a good day too. Any relation to Shane Hnidy (hockey player). I have no idea what team he plays for now. He's an ex-Senator from Brandon. Fri, Mar. 13th, 2009 04:27 pm (UTC)

Believe it or not, people mispronounce my name all the time. They say 'Asshole'. In all seriousness... I know/have known dozens of other Kevins in my lifetime and every single one of them spells it K-E-V-I-N. Yet I don't know how many times I've had people spell my name K-E-V-E-N. No-one named Kevin spells it like that!!! I also get 'Calvin' a lot. I want to change the spelling of my name to Qevynnefu (the -fu is silent).
